Growth form Epiphyte, slender, 7-15 cm high. Rhizome 2-3 mm in diameter. Root filiform, up to 4 cm long,  flexible, glabrous. Stems much branched, slender, cylindrical, proliferously leafed, internodes 3-4.5 mm long. Leaf oblong or elliptic-oblong; apex oblique, minutely apiculate; base subpetiolate-narrowed; lamina 0.5-0.96 cm long, 2-3.5 mm wide, glabrous, with brown spots on both sides; sheaths tight, densely warty; apex toothed, with bristled margin, bristles 0.4-0.8 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, one-flowered, erect, when young enveloped by a spathe. Spathe elliptic, sparsely warty, apex apiculate; floral bracts oblong, thin, transparent, with brown spots, warty, 0.94 cm long, 0.25 cm wide. Flower upright. Median sepal elliptic, 0.5-0.55 cm long, 0.19 cm wide, 3-nerved at base, 5-nerved at upper part, with silver spots; apex acute, base decurrent. Lateral sepal obliquely oblong, adnate to the column, 0.54 cm long, 0.18 cm wide, with brown spots, 3-nerved at base, 5-nerved at upper part; apex apiculate. Petal oblanceolate, 0.54 cm long, 0.14 cm wide, with brown and silvers spots; apex obtuse, 3-nerved, base truncate. Lip suborbicular-ovate, 0.25-0.30 cm long, 0.25-0.38 cm wide; epichile obtuse, with silver spots, 8-nerved; hypochile subcordate, spurred; spur filiform, narrowly obtuse, appressed the ovary, 0.7-0.95 cm long. Column 0.13 cm long, without column foot; clinandrium lobulate; rostellum triangular. Anther glabrous, in front distinctly truncate, dorsally with an obtuse projection; pollinia obliquely pyriform, laterally compressed; viscidium rounded, single. Ovary cylindrical, slender, glabrous, punctate, 1.15-1.6 cm long. Capsule fusiform, cylindrical, 1.2 cm long, 0.2 cm diameter.

 

Distribution - Papua New Guinea.

Habitat and Ecology - Epiphyte in montane forest on Mt. Kani and Mt Finisterre. Altitude 400-1000 m. Flowering in March and October in the wild.

Notes - 1. The species is characterized by the relatively long spur and broad lip of the flowers.

2. Leaves usually brownish, sometimes reddish tinged. Flowers dark salmon-brown colored.

3. The epithet myrtillus refers to the myrtle-like appearance of the plant.
