In sympodial orchids the aerial stem when more or less distinctly fleshy. Pseudobulbs often do not look like bulbs at all; the term is also used by many authors for slender, rigid, petiole-like stems if these carry apical, non-sheathing leaves (as in many species of Cadetia and Ceratostylis).
