Glomera goliathensis J.J.Sm.

Glomera goliathensis  J.J.Sm., Bull. Jard. Bot. Buitenzorg, 2(2):2 (1911)- Type : de Kock 32 (Holotype, BO spirits specimen 720.20)

Growth form Epiphyte. Rhizome not seen. Roots filiform, long, flexible, glabrous. Stem elliptic in cross-section, proliferously leafed, completely covered by leaf sheaths, internodes 2.5 cm long, 0.4 cm wide. Leaf  elongated ovate-lanceolate, curved, half twisted at base, midrib grooved above, obtusely prominent below, above on either side of the midrib convex, above near the lower margin finely punctate, carnose; apex gradually acuminate, strongly unequal 2-lobed, shorter acuminate, longer narrower and up to 1 cm long; lamina 8.5 cm long, 1.5 cm wide; sheath tubular, equaling the internodes, in cross section transversely elliptic, somewhat angular and obtusely keeled, finely punctate; apex toothed, with glabrous margin. Inflorescences terminal, many-flowered, capitate, nodding, 3 cm in diameter, when young enveloped by a spathe. Spathe sub-orbicular, sometimes connate, obtuse, dorsally finely punctate; floral bracts transparent, thin, ovate-triangular, somewhat acuminate, obtuse, concave, 1.9 cm long, 0.9 cm wide. Flowers upright, when fully opened 1.5 cm wide, often not opening well. Median sepal  oblong, 5-nerved, apex obtuse, 1.3 cm long, 0.45 cm wide. Lateral sepals at base 0.5 cm saccate-connate, clasping the spur, obliquely oblong, 5-nerved,  apex obtuse, obtusely apiculate, 1.3 cm long, 0.5 cm wide. Petal obliquely oblong, apex truncate-obtuse, base concave, 3-nerved, 1.1 cm long, 0.4 cm wide. Lip adnate to the column, entire, blade making an obtuse angle with the spur, obovate-quadrangular, above inside with small longitudinal rib, 0.4 cm long, 0.35 cm wide;  epichile orbicular, truncate, recurved; hypochile truncate-thickened, spurred; spur pointing backwards, appressed against the ovary, dorsally compressed, ovate, orbicular, base somewhat contracted, 0.3 cm long, 0.3 cm wide. Column dorsally convex, 0.27 cm long, apex filament triangular, retuse; clinandrium 3-lobed, lateral lobes very small, median lobe larger, triangular, apex obtuse; stelidia triangular, bidentate. Anther cucullate, suborbicular, apex bilobulate, membranous-marginate, base conical-raised, 0.13 cm wide; rostellum broadly truncate, subretuse, as long as the stelidia; stigma with lower margin raised and recurved, with rostellum forming a trapezium; pollinia 4, compressed pear-shaped; viscidium present. Ovary cylindrical, 3-grooved, glabrous, 0.5 cm long. Capsule not seen.

Distribution –Indonesia.

Habitat and Ecology - Epiphyte in upper montane forest in shaded positions. Altitude 1850 m. Flowering in March in the wild.

Notes -  1. Flowers white with rose-red lip.

2. The epithet  goliathensis refers to the location where the specimen was collected, mount Goliath.
